FUNNY STORY
- Emily Henry
This is the kind of rom-com that made me realize just how much I’d missed this genre. It’s been a while since I read one, and boy, was I happy to finally get super indulged, engrossed, and immersed in it.
The plot is unique and kinda funny. The story revolves around Daphne and Miles, both of whose exes cheat on them - leading to Daphne moving in with Miles (her ex-fiancé's new fiancée’s ex-boyfriend - I hope you have a blast trying to understand what I just said, lol). Over time, they become each other's best friends and then get together (obviously, cause it's a rom-com and it always has a happy ending - which is why I love them so much!!). The book follows Daphne's journey of getting over her ex, making new bonds, overcoming her insecurities, and so much more.
Although I loved the story and absolutely devoured it in 2 days, I have a few complaints. The sequence of events following the unique beginning became waaayyy too basic and predictable. I rate rom-coms based on cute banter, and this was definitely not up to the mark. A little more character depth would've made it more interesting, and I often felt that several parts could've been more elaborate which would've given it a sense of completeness.
However, apart from these minor complaints, the book was really nice. The writing style was easy to follow. The characters were really likable and interesting, and there was a good amount of emotional depth and character growth. You don’t really notice the above-mentioned complaints while reading - it’s only after you finish and start thinking about it that they come up.
I had a great time reading it, and I'd give it a solid 2.8 out of 5 (pardon my rating system, it’s been called irrational). Although the rating might feel a little bit on the lower end, my scale is a little harsh and it’s still a decent read for fans of this genre. Best read while travelling (which I did, so I speak from experience). So, pick this one up if you need something light and fun!
